Murmur is a macOS dictation application that converts your speech into polished text. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how your data is handled.
All speech recognition is performed on your Mac using Apple's built-in speech recognition engine. Your audio never leaves your device. No audio recordings are stored or transmitted to any server.
When AI text enhancement is enabled, the transcribed text (not audio) is sent to a third-party language model API (Groq) for processing. This text is used solely to improve grammar, punctuation, and clarity. Groq does not store or use your text for training purposes. The enhanced text is returned to your device and inserted into the active application.
When you create a Murmur account, we collect:
This information is used to manage your account and provide support.
We collect anonymous usage metrics to improve Murmur, including:
This data is tied to your account but does not include the content of your dictations unless you opt in to post-edit training data collection.
Your personal dictionary entries (custom words, corrections, and vocabulary) are synced to our server so they persist across sessions. This data is tied to your account and is not shared with third parties.
Our website (getmurmur.ca) collects anonymous analytics data, including page views, button clicks, scroll depth, and time on page. Visitors are identified by a hashed IP address — we never store raw IP addresses. We may also use Google Analytics for additional website insights, which is governed by Google's privacy policy.
Our admin dashboard uses a session cookie for authentication. The landing page uses sessionStorage (not cookies) for analytics session tracking. No third-party tracking cookies are set unless Google Analytics is enabled.
Usage telemetry is retained indefinitely to provide historical statistics. Account data is retained for as long as your account exists. You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by contacting us.
All data transmitted between Murmur and our servers is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS. Our database is hosted on a persistent volume with access restricted to our backend service.
Murmur is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
If you have questions about this privacy policy or your data, contact us at support@murmur.app.
